I have decided to publish a serie of articles with the works of different artists who use the embroidery as artistic technique. I begin with Joetta Maue, an american artist with a really beautifull work. She is very very nice too.

Joetta Maue empleó el bordado como técnica artística por primera vez por “motivos puramente conceptuales”, ya que le atraía mucho su tradición y su “peso”. También le atrajo la sensación de meditación y curación que supone. Muy relacionados con el bordado, están “los temas de la intimidad, el hogar y la feminidad”, que ya había trabajado en su obra.
Empezó utilizando el bordado hace unos seis años, en la universidad, a la vez que hacía una serie de fotografías de grandes dimensiones a color. Para la exposición de su tesis quería combinar estas dos técnicas de una forma armoniosa. Tras mucho experimentar, decidió transferir la imagen a un lienzo y bordar la imagen. Sintió que esta era la resolución ideal para su trabajo y pensó que esa sería su línea de trabajo y no ha parado de emplear esta técnica desde entonces.
Su aprendizaje fue autodidacta siguiendo las instrucciones de un pequeño libro de costura que explicaba siete puntos básicos. Empezó empleando un punto sencillo, pero fue introduciendo más puntos conforme avanzaba su trabajo y aumentaba su nivel.
En cuanto a la temática es importante señalar que toda su obra está inspirada en su propia vida. Esta artista realiza obras con temas principalmente autobiográficos, como forma de honestidad en la que expresa sus sentimientos, deseos y reclama su feminidad. En sus primeros trabajos trataba el tema de su relación con su marido, pero conforme su trabajo aumentaba de tamaño, también se abría al mundo, tratando temas como “el amor, el matrimonio, la maternidad y la mujer, en una vía más general y menos específica”.
En la actualidad ha empezado una serie sobre “el sueño, el cuerpo, la vida y la muerte, el yin y el yang”, lo que hace necesaria la incorporación de una serie de nuevos modelos, pero trabajando siempre con imágenes de gente que conoce. Ya que pasar tantas horas con alguien, está más lleno de significado si la amas, lo que le permite trasmitir esa intimidad y amor en la obra.
Su método de trabajo consiste en “acercarse al dibujo haciendo el punto como una marca en el papel”. Generalmente tiene un trabajo grande y uno pequeño con los que trabaja a la vez. Primero elige la tela. Para ella, elegir la tela y el tipo de bordado es una gran responsabilidad, ya que estos factores son muy importantes en el resultado final. “A veces tengo ideas durante meses y no tengo la tela correcta. O, a veces, tengo una tela muy especial y tengo que esperar a la idea apropiada para esa tela”. Segundo, proyecta la imagen que va a utilizar y la dibuja en la tela con pintura al agua. Una vez que tiene el dibujo listo empieza a trabajar de una manera muy intuitiva, dejando que el dibujo tome vida. A continuación hace los bordados, después hace el trabajo más estructural y de aplicaciones. Por último, incorpora pintura cuando es necesario, aunque en la actualidad está invirtiendo este paso del proceso, realizándolo antes que el bordado.
Sus primeros trabajos estaban hechos directamente desde fotografías, que rellenaba con “puntadas simples, creando áreas de denso color y espacios vacíos”. Conforme su trabajo aumentaba en profundidad y dimensiones, empezaba a experimentar y llegó a su método de trabajo actual, en el que proyecta fotografías directamente en la tela y emplea muchas aplicaciones. Mientras su confianza crece se toma más libertades en el dibujo. En la actualidad, como resultado de intentar que la pieza parezca menos densa, ha empezado a introducir pintura en el dibujo, así hay áreas de color sin la pesadez de las puntadas del bordado.
Joetta emplea “todo tipo de telas vintage”, siendo sus favoritas las que tienen aspecto de estar poco usadas, con imperfecciones y con manchas. El resto de telas que pone en las aplicaciones las obtiene de su familia o de tiendas de segunda mano. El hilo que emplea es el hilo de algodón de la marca DMC para bordar. En cuanto a la pintura, emplea acrílico muy diluido, ya que es estable en la tela pero funciona como una mancha.
Como inconvenientes no encuentra ninguno en la técnica, ya que intenta aprender de las equivocaciones y arreglarlas. Pero sí los encuentra en como colgar su trabajo, ya que no le gusta enmarcalo, sino que prefiere colgarlos directamente de la pared y poder moverlos y ver como responde la tela. Así que como sus obras cada vez son más grandes y pesadas tiene que buscar soluciones para que estén colgadas sin que se rasguen las telas.
Para finalizar, entre las ventajas que encuentra en el bordado como técnica artística están el acto de meditación, que se puede trabajar mientras se conversa o en silencio perdido en los pensamientos de uno; el control y la flexibilidad del medio; la satisfacción personal como artista y como espectadora y la capacidad de darle una nueva utilidad a bonitas telas (información dada por la artista).

Joetta Maue used the embroidery as an artistic technique for the first time “for purely conceptual reasons”, because she liked its tradition and “weight”. She also liked the feeling of meditation and healing it has. Very connected with the embroidering they are the “themes of intimacy, the home and the feminine”, she had already worked in her work.
She began to use the embroidery about six years ago when she was in graduate school. Over the course of graduate school she produced a series of embroidered text works while simultaneously making large scale photographs. For her thesis exhibition she wanted to combine these 2 bodies of work in a cohesive way. After much experimentation she decided to transfer the image of the photograph on to the linen and embroider the image itself. This felt like the ideal resolution to her work and ideas and has pursued this technique since she taught herself from a little book which explained seven basic stitches. She began using the split stitch, but she began to use more varied stitched as her work and her level grew.
About the themes she represents, it is important to say that all her work is inspired by her own life. This artist mainly makes autobiographical works, as a way of honesty, in which she expresses her feelings, desires and reclaims her femininity. In her first works she worked about her relationship with her husband, but as her work grew in depth and size she opened to world, and worked “about the experience of love, marriage, parenthood and the woman in a more general and less specific way”.
Recently, she has began a series about the sleeping body, “the body, life and death, the yin and yang of things”, what needs to incorporate new models, but always working form the image of someone she knows. The reason of this is that when you have to spend so many hours with someone, it is much more meaningful if you love that person. It allows putting across that intimacy and loving into the work.
Her way of work is based in approaching her work like she would approach a drawing making the stitch like a mark on the paper. Generally she has one larger project and a small one going on. First she chooses the linen. For her picking out the linen and the embroidery is a great responsibility, because those factors are really important in the end result. “Sometimes I will have ideas for months and will not have the correct linen. Or sometimes I have a very special linen and I have to kind of wait for the right idea to fit that linen”. Second, she projects the image she is using onto the linen and draws with a water soluble marker. When the drawing is done she begins to work in an intuitively way, letting the drawing to come alive. Then, she makes the embroideries, then the appliqué and structural work. And finally, she adds the paint, when it is necessary, although recently she is beginning to do this part at the beginning of the process, just before the embroidery.
Her first works were made directly from photography, which she “fills in with split stitches, creating areas of dense color and open space”. While her works grew in size, she began to try out; she came to her actual method of work: projecting the photographs directly onto the linen and using lots of appliqués. While her confidence in her process grows, she began to take more and more liberties in the drawing. As a result of wanting the pieces to appear less dense she started to incorporate painting and staining so that she could have areas of color without the heaviness of the stitching.
Joetta use “all found vintage linens”. Her favorite ones are a little used looking with stains and little imperfections. The fabrics used in the appliqués are found in her families’ closets and in thrift stores. The thread she uses is the cotton DMC embroidery floss. And when she uses paint she prefers very watered down acrylic, because it is stable on the fabric but it works as a stain.
Technically, she doesn’t found any trouble, because she tries to embrace the mistakes and learn from them. But she finds troubles in how to hang her work, because she doesn’t like frame her work, but she prefers to hang the work directly on the wall, and be able to move it and respond like fabric does. So as her work gets larger and heavier, she is facing issues in keeping it hung without ripping or tearing.
Finally, the satisfactions she finds are the meditation process, in which she can work while speaking or just in silence lost in her own thoughts; the control and the flexibility of the medium; the personal satisfaction as artist and viewer and the ability to bring back to live old fabrics (This information was given by the artist by email conversation).

Juan Muñoz es un artista clave en el panorama del arte contemporáneo que murió hace diez años. Creó una estética personal y reconocible en todo el mundo. Edmund Dulac, Toulouse (Francia) 1882- Londres (RU) 1953 fue un destacado ilustrador dela Edad de Oro de la Ilustración.
Estudió Derecho, a la vez que Bellas Artes. Con 22 años se traslada a Londres, donde trabaja con la Galeria de Arte Leicester, en la primera vende sus pinturas, y con la editorial Holder & Stoughton, ilustrando sus libros.Tras la Primera Guerra Mundial, la edición de libros ilustrados de lujo decae, por lo que se dedica a las caricaturas, los retratos, los trajes de teatro o la escenografía.

Entre otras obras ilustra: Las noches de Arabia /Las mil y una noches (1907), La Tempestad de Shakespeare (1908) y Los Cuentos Hans Christian Andersen (1911).

Edmund Dulac, Toulouse (France) 1882- Londres (UK) 1953 was a great illustrator of the Golden Age of gift book illustration. He studied Law and Fine Arts. At the age of 22, he moved to London, wher he began to work with Leicester Art Gallery and with Holden & Stoughton, illustrating their books. After the Firs World War, the luxury illustrated books are not sold, so he began to work drawing portraits, cartoons, designing scenery…

Some of his works are the illustrations of the next books: The Arabian Nights (1907), The Tempst, Shakespeare (1908) and Hans Christian Andersen’s Fairy Tales (1911).
